  • The Va’ad Hamishpat was a student-faculty disciplinary committee. It was my honor and privilege to sit as chair of this committee for seventeen years. Our committee heard a range of cases in which we balanced justice and mercy, fairness and equity. Our deliberations were intense and profound. And students then helped to compose a ruling that explained our findings. Students still speak of their experience serving on the Va’ad as the most formative leadership training they ever received.

Below are examples of rulings the Va’ad Hamishpat wrote.

In 2007, a group of students and faculty gathered to compose a constitution for the Va’ad Hamishpat. That constitution provided a fair and transparent process for hearings and a bill of rights for students who were brought before the Va’ad. Click on the image to see that constitution.
